Chinese Language Software
Chinese language software is made by quite a few companies. I'm talking here about software for learning
Chinese.
Please note that I have not much used any of these programs for Chinese, but I am
very familiar with all of them for Spanish. (I spend a lot of time in Mexico, and this website is an outgrowth of a
similar one I did on Spanish.)
Based on having used the programs for Spanish, I came into this research with some pretty strong opinions,
but I also knew that just because a company had an excellent program for learning one language didn't mean that
they would have done as good a job on another one. In working on these pages on how to learn Chinese fast, I have
read many reviews of the various programs around the internet.
Multi-Media Computer Programs
The best known multi-media program is probably Rosetta Stone
Chinese, but I am much more of a fan of Fluenz Mandarin in that category.
Why? Because I subscribe to the learning theory behind their work. For more on this, see the individual pages for
each program.
Audio Programs
For programs where the heart of the program is listening to CDs or MP3 files, Rocket Chinese and Pimsleur Mandarin are both very
good.
Most people who are using Chinese language software want to learn Mandarin, which is the official language of
China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. If you happen to want to learn Cantonese, which is spoken in parts of southern China,
in Hong Kong, and around the world where people from this region have settled, then take a look at Pimsleur Cantonese.
All these links take you to pages on this site, and from there you can go to places that provide these
products.
